Anyone who travels to Australia’s Southern end will hear about one of its most popular tourist spots; the Great Ocean Road. Listed as one the world’s most scenic coastal road trips, the Great Ocean Road weaves around the jagged cliffs and crashing beach shores. The region is bursting with attractions! From natural wonders such as lush rainforests, large rock formations, and picturesque beaches. To unforgettable tourist charms including small beach towns and friendly locals both human and otherwise.

The entire road trip can last up to 12 hours if you are going from one end to the next with only a few stops along the way. But I suggest taking your time, seeing all the greatest hits this road can offer you. Even spending a night or two in the scenic region. Here are my personal favourite spots that are well worth the stopover.

For a Natural Wonder; The Twelve Apostles

These ancient rock formations have been around for millions of years, standing strong against the wild waves of the coast. Featured on most of the area’s postcards, they are the number one tourist attraction along the Great Ocean Road. You can see these impressive limestone stacks from several angels. The Visitor Facility’s lookout point is typically the most crowded section. Located on the nearby clifftop, you can see the surrounding coastline and the stacks emerging straight from the crashing waves. Otherwise, you can head down the Gibson Steps, where you will be dwarfed by the stacks as you stroll along the beachfront. If you have money to spare, you can even spoil yourself and set off on a helicopter flight! Seeing the limestone rocks and coastal region from a bird’s eye view. Guaranteeing you a truly unforgettable adventure!

To meet the locals; Kennett River

The Great Ocean Road is swarming with friendly locals, from the town shop owners to local surfers, and of course the native animals. The Australian animals are certainly not shy in the area, with the region a popular home for the beloved kangaroos, kookaburras, and of course Koalas. Kennett River is densly populated with koalas, having hundreds of wild koalas lounging in the trees. Simply head along the Grey River Road, and look up into the eucalyptus branches, spotting the round grey fluffs of fur snoozing the day away.

For an unforgettable surf; Bells Beach

Whether you want to hit the waves yourself or want to simply sit back and watch the pros go at it, Bells Beach is for you! It is world-renowned, being one of the best surf beaches in Australia. Bringing pro surfers from all over the world to compete in the surfing championships. Visiting this beach during the surf season can help you truly see its importance in the surf community. As you are exposed to the events held here, and the tornuments that let you surf next to some of the greatest pros alive.

To get off the beaten track; The Great Otway’s National Park

Immerse yourself in Victoria’s natural beauty-simply parking your car and heading along one of the many walking tracks weaved through Great Otway’s rainforest. The tracks are home to many marvellous attractions, from incredible cascading waterfalls to a unique range of flora and fauna. You can spend an entire day in this dense rainforest, discovery extraordinary natural sights that are only a breath away from civilisation.
