The Great Barrier Reef is absolutely huge, so there really is no way to decide the best part of it.

Great Barrier Reef

The entire reef stretches over 2,300 kilometres along the east coast of Australia and is divided into sections, which are then named. Depending on what you wish to see, then there are different parts of the reef that would be considered the best for you.

Some of the most popular individual reefs which can be accessed from Cairns:

Milln Reef

Milln Reef is located around 60 kilometres from Cairns and is considered to be one of the best reefs in the region. It is a favourite for beginner divers, as the waters are clear and there is often an abundance of fish and marine life known to be in the area. Bommies are used to gain access to the reef with a huge concrete slab that sits at the bottom of the ocean floor that allows the boat to dock there while passengers jump out in the open reef to explore, while no reef is damaged in the process. Milne Reef is also a hugely popular night diving destination, as many marine creatures can be seen during this time.

Hastings Reef

Hastings Reef is a popular location to explore for many boats. It is 55 kilometres off the coast of Cairns and is known for its huge range of bright coloured tropical fish that call Hastings Reef home. With both shallow coral and steep wall dives, Hastings Reef reaches up to 15 metres deep, which is where all the mysterious creatures of the sea such as sharks, stingrays and massive sized fish can be found. If you are just snorkelling, the visibility of the reef is excellent, therefore you can see many of the things that are on the ocean floor as well.

Flynn Reef

Flynn Reef is a lot smaller than the previous two, however it is home to many prestigious diving sites that are jam packed with unbelievable coral, great visibility, and of course, an abundance of marine life. Flynn Reef is considered to be the best place to visit if you wish to take photos of the vibrantly coloured coral and fish that swarm the area. If you are lucky, you may even come across one of the resident turtles which call Flynn Reef home!

There are hundreds of locations to visit around the Great Barrier Reef, all with their own flare and attraction. However, if you are a beginner at diving and snorkelling, any reef you visit will take your breath away, as the entire reef is absolutely stunning!
